Ever notice how much you sweat in those cheap, non-breathing clothes from places like Wet Seal and the junior’s sections of many department stores? Well that’s a good thing during the winter! Many cheap fabrics don’t allow heat to escape! Polyester, for example, makes a great undershirt in the winter and is very inexpensive.

Tights

A sturdy, quality pair of jeans with thick enough material to keep you warm can run up to $200 or even more! Fake people out this way: buy the cheap, thin jeans for $20 at Forever 21 and Ross, and buy a few pairs of $4 tights to wear underneath. Again, their synthetic material will trap in heat and since they’re thin, people won’t even be able to tell you have anything under your jeans. My friend who offers singing lessons rents a super low-rent studio, but it’s low-rent for a reason: there’s no heating. To still look professional in her slacks for the students coming in to learn to sing better from an esteemed vocalist, she buys tights by the dozens to wear under her nice pants.

Wind breakers

These are super cheap because they don’t have all the filling of down jackets, but they still block the wind. You can get one for as little as $30 and beneath it just pile up tops and sweaters. You’ll be insulated and cozy.

Get the unexpected shoes

Popular female shoe companies like Aldos charge hundreds of dollars to add their flare to their sturdy-bottomed, insulated boots. But I found my cute, fur-lined and insulated boots at, you’ll never guess, the Harley Davidson store! This brand isn’t known to be “trendy” at all, but instead very useful and sturdy. So, they don’t know that high fashion shoppers would pay a lot of money for a little added decoration to their shoes. Therefore, they don’t charge much when they do add that ornamentation. My boots have a sturdy grip, super warm lining and totally water-resistant exterior. And they were only $60. Shop brands that aren’t known for being necessarily fashionable, but practical, and seek out their handful of fashionable pieces.
